In 2007, I moved back to Philadelphia, having left nine years earlier after completing my graduate work. While I was excited about being back in the city that I loved, I felt that something was missing but I couldn’t quite articulate what it was. I discovered the answer in 2008 when I was invited to attend a revitalization meeting of the Philadelphia Chapter of the Association of Black Women in Higher Education (ABWHE). At that time, I didn’t know much about the organization or the women involved, but I figured, "What did I have to lose?" I had no idea how much I would gain. When I stepped into the room, I was awed to be in the presence of talented, energetic, positive Black women, and I immediately realized that what I had been missing was “sisterhood.” I found it in ABWHE! I have developed life-long friendships with the sisters of ABWHE. Additionally, I have been enriched personally and professionally through the varied speakers, presenters, events and committee work.
It is befitting that our motto is “Lifting as We Climb,” so I encourage all members, new and old, to participate in as many ABWHE events and social activities as possible and to join a committee or two. We have climbed considerably over the years and, with more and more sisters sharing their talents and treasures, we continue to climb even higher! Here’s to an exciting year!
Tiffenia Archie, Ph.D., President ABWHE Philadelphia Chapter.
